In addition to tracking stolen property and kidnap victims, GPS locators can be used to lead police officers to crime scenes. Dozens of US cities make use of the Shotspotter Gunshot Location System to track and monitor gun violence, and now Birmingham in the UK has followed suit. As the name suggests, the Shotspotter Gunshot Location System locates sharp gunshot-like noises through sensors with built-in GPS locators. The sensors lead back to the police station where trained officers determine whether the noises are in fact gunshots or something else. If a noise is deemed a gunshot, police officers are dispatched to the scene.
The system has been installed on buildings in some of Birmingham's most crime-ridden areas, where it is hoped that the sensors and quick police reaction time will help decrease the rapidly escalating level of gun violence. Sensors are able to pick up gunshots and similar sounding blasts within a 25m radius. They record the audio clip and the GPS location, which are relayed back to the police station where officers who have received special training will determine whether action is needed.
According to Chief Superintendent Chris McKeogh, of the West Midlands police, bullets produce sound waves with a particular "signature" which the trained officers will be able to recognise. The system's only shortcoming is that while shots fired outside have a good chance of being detected, shots fired inside or with a silencer could go unrecorded.
